The actor and singer Alírio Netto (Freddie Mercury Revisited, Khallice, former Age of Artemis) has just been confirmed as the protagonist of the opera-rock Frankenstein, by the composer Alberto Heller, which takes place in June 27, 28 and 29, 2018, in Florianópolis (SC). The production is an accomplishment of Camerata Florianópolis, who recently performed with guitarist Steve Vai at Rock in Rio 2015, with regency of Jeferson Della Rocca, scenic direction of Renato Turnes, artistic direction of Alberto Heller himself and executive production of Maria Elita Pereira.

In the main roles, great names of lyrical singing and national rock like Alirio Netto (in the role of the Creature), Rodrigo Matos (Victor Frankenstein), Carla Domingues (Elizabeth), Masami Ganev (Justine), Daniel Galvão (Henry), Alexei Leão (Robert Walton) and Claudia Ondrusek (Agatha) – in addition to male choir, band and symphony orchestra.

Ally Netto comments on opera-rock Frankenstein:

“It will be very cool to debut an original opera in which the character has been written for me, both musically and acting wise, in my home town Florianopolis. Frankenstein is a challenging work for every singer and I am committed to doing my best and doing what the role asks for. In addition, having the company of Camerata Florianópolis musicians, who already performed with guitarist Steve Vai, is a tremendous honor. Will be amazing!”.

With a libretto adapted from the eponymous book by Mary Shelley (a book that celebrates its bicentenary this year), the opera proposes to rescue the tragic and existential dimension of the original – thus distancing itself from the cinematographic adaptations that usually transform this deep and very rich story in a tale of terror. In this opera, the conception (of both the libretto and the music) is highly dramatic, dramaticity that is not diminished by the fact that it is an opera-rock. Although formally it can be framed as a musical, stylistically FRANKENSTEIN differs from the tradition of musicals (which generally have a strong pop influence, as in the case of Broadway musicals or even Disney’s and the like), resulting in a unique blend of its kind in the context of contemporary productions.

The various themes that intertwine in history remain absolutely current: the relation between creator and creature, the ethical limits in scientific research (a discussion that extends from cloning to stem cells, including robotics and artificial intelligence), the (the boundaries between the animal and the spiritual, the conflict between the rational and the instinctual), the sense of existence (who we are, where we come from, where we go), the relativity of good and evil, overcoming death, respect for difference and alterity, stigmatization and marginalization of the divergent. In addition to the present, these themes are universal: they extrapolate the European context in which and from which they were born and find fertile ground in our local reality.

The libretto and composition are written by composer Alberto Heller, a multi-award-winning musician, author of concerts, symphonies, music for theater, dance and cinema, and who joins his musical knowledge to the literary (he has a PhD in Literature and a member of the Catarinense Academy of Arts and Letters). In the last ten years he was also responsible for the arrangements of the various editions of the project Rock’n Camerata next to Camerata Florianópolis – work that aroused the idea of composing a rock opera. The presence of the opera is very strong in the life of this orchestra: in the last twenty years the group, directed by the also often awarded maestro Jeferson Della Rocca, established Florianópolis as one of the most important operatic poles in the country, performing works such as La Traviata, Rigoletto, Carmen , The Magic Flute, Cavalleria Rusticana, The Barber of Seville and many others, always in impeccable productions and critically acclaimed.

The two-hour, two-hour opera-rock opera Frankenstein promises to be one of the most ambitious and original productions this year – not just at the national level.
